🚫 1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

  • Why harmful: Harsh detergents that can strip natural oils from skin and scalp, leading to dryness, irritation, and eczema flare-ups.

  • Extra concern: SLES can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a potential carcinogen.

🚫2. Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, etc.)

  • Why harmful: Act as preservatives but are endocrine disruptors—they mimic estrogen in the body, which can interfere with hormone development in infants.

🚫3. Formaldehyde & Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives

(quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, bronopol)

  • Why harmful: Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen and strong skin sensitizer, increasing risk of allergic reactions and dermatitis.

  • Why harmful: Can contain phthalates (not listed on labels), which are hormone disruptors linked to developmental and reproductive harm. Also a major trigger for skin irritation and respiratory issues.

🚫5. PEG Compounds (polyethylene glycol)

  • Why harmful: Used to make products creamy, but can be contaminated with ethylene oxide (carcinogen) and 1,4-dioxane during manufacturing.

🚫6. Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) & Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI)

  • Why harmful: Strong preservatives linked to allergic reactions, skin burns, and possible neurotoxicity with long-term exposure.

🚫7. Mineral Oil / Petrolatum

  • Why harmful: If not properly refined, can contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), some of which are carcinogenic. Also creates a barrier that traps heat and sweat, potentially worsening rashes.

🚫8. Artificial Dyes (FD&C or D&C colors)

  • Why harmful: Some are derived from petroleum and can contain heavy metals like lead and arsenic, linked to neurotoxicity and skin irritation.

Diapers & Wipes – What to Look For:

There are 3 main things to look for to ensure your baby diapers are non-toxic:

1. Free of Harmful Chemicals:

Avoid diapers that contain the following toxic substances:

  • Fragrance / Perfume – often a source of undisclosed phthalates and allergens

  • Chlorine / Chlorine dioxide – used in bleaching, can produce toxic dioxins

  • Phthalates – (Diethyl phthalate (DEP) Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) linked to hormone disruption

  • Parabens – (methylparaben, propylparaben, etc) preservatives associated with endocrine disruption

  • Lotions / Dyes (especially in contact with skin) – can cause irritation or allergic reactions

  • VOC emissions (volatile organic compounds) – some diapers emit VOCs like toluene or ethylbenzene

  • Petrolatum – toxic heavy metal derived from crude oil/petroleum

2. Totally Chlorine-Free (TCF)

What is Totally Chlorine Free?!

Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) diapers are made without the use of chlorine or chlorine compounds in the bleaching process of the diaper’s pulp. Instead, they use safer alternatives like oxygen, peroxide, or ozone. This is important for baby health because chlorine bleaching can produce toxic byproducts called dioxins, which are linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and reproductive issues. Choosing TCF diapers helps reduce your baby’s exposure to these harmful chemicals and supports a cleaner, safer environment.

Look for diapers & wipes labeled:

  • “Totally Chlorine Free (TCF)” – safest option, no chlorine used in the bleaching process

  • Avoid: “Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF)” – better than regular chlorine, but not completely toxin-free. Second best option.

All of the diapers options I have shared here are TCF.

3. Certifications to Look For

These third-party labels add credibility:

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 – tested for harmful substances

  • GOTS (for organic cotton components) – ensures organic & toxin-free textile processing

  • FSC Certified – responsibly sourced wood pulp, better for baby and environment

Keep in mind, my baby isn’t here yet but this is based on ingredients and reviews! I plan to use the Kudos diapers and wipes. Kudos is the only diaper in the U.S. with a 100% cotton topsheet. I am passionate about making sure only the most gentle materials and ingredients are touching such a sensitive area of babies skin. Since Kudos doesn’t have newborn size diapers I do have a pack of Coterie newborn diapers to use right away if the Kudos size 1 doesn’t fit immediately.

But I am also excited to eventually try allll of the brands in this post above and give you my full review – I will update you and post my reviews on my Instagram, Tiktok and this specific post as I try them so stay tuned!

Cloth Diapering

Cloth diapering is a good non-toxic choice for your baby because it avoids the harmful chemicals often found in disposable diapers, such as chlorine, phthalates, fragrances, and dyes, which can irritate sensitive skin and disrupt hormones. Made from natural fibers like organic cotton or bamboo, cloth diapers are breathable, gentle, and free from synthetic additives. They also reduce environmental waste and long-term costs, making them a healthier and more sustainable option for both your baby and the planet.

What to Look For:

There are 3 main things to look for to ensure your baby gear is non-toxic:

1. Green Guard Gold Certification:

A third-party certification issued by UL Environment that verifies products have low chemical emissions.

GREENGUARD-certified products are tested for over 10,000 chemicals, including:

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) – like formaldehyde or benzene, which can off-gas from plastics, foams, and finishes.

  • Phthalates, heavy metals, and other pollutants that affect air quality.

There are two levels:

  • GREENGUARD Certification – meets basic low-emission standards.

  • GREENGUARD Gold Certification – meets even stricter criteria, suitable for sensitive populations like children and the elderly.

Look for this logo to ensure the product is Green Guard Gold Certified:

2. Flame Retardant Free

Ensuring that baby gear is free from flame retardants is important because many flame retardant chemicals are linked to hormone disruption, developmental delays, and other health risks—especially in infants who are more sensitive to chemical exposures.

Here’s how to confirm a product is flame retardant-free when shopping:

Check for clear language such as:

  • “Flame retardant free”

  • “No added flame retardants”

  • “Free from PBDEs, TDCPP, TCEP, or other chemical flame retardants”

Manufacturers who avoid flame retardants typically highlight it proudly in the product details or packaging.

This one is easy to set up, portable but still gives you all the benefits! Also super affordable. I personally own this one and it has been great.

11: Noise Reduction Bluetooth Headphones for Work – Sean recently got these and really likes them. They are perfect for the blue collar worker in your life that needs ear protection while also listening to music/podcasts. He says they stay in well and are comfortable to wear!

12: Pact Men’s White T-Shirts – Pact is a great brand for non-toxic 100% cotton clothing for men and women. These 2 pack of white t-shirts are a great gift idea and swap!

13: The Black Stuff Bar Soap – Along with their deodorant this bar of soap is a great non-toxic swap. If the man in your life is hooked on the toxic Irish Spring body wash…get them this bar of soap!

14: Cast Iron Skillet – If the dad in your life likes to cook or grill and they don’t have a cast iron skillet…you must get them one! It’s my favorite pan to cook with, all toxin free and it will benefit you too because everything they will cook on it is delish. Good to bring camping or use on the grill too!
