6 Toxin Free Mascaras on Amazon

Mascara is a staple in many makeup routines, providing a dramatic touch to enhance the beauty of our eyes. However, what most people don’t realize is that some mascaras contain harmful toxins that can pose risks to our health. In this blog post, we’ll explore the specific details about these toxic ingredients commonly found in mascaras, empowering you to make informed choices about the products you use.

Ingredients to Avoid in Mascara

Parabens: Parabens are a group of preservatives commonly used in cosmetics, including mascaras, to prevent the growth of bacteria and prolong product shelf life. However, studies have linked parabens to endocrine disruption, which can interfere with hormone function and potentially lead to reproductive and developmental issues. Look out for ingredients such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, and propylparaben, and opt for paraben-free mascara alternatives.

Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is a well-known carcinogen used as a preservative in certain cosmetics, including mascaras. Exposure to formaldehyde has been associated with eye and skin irritation, allergies, and an increased risk of cancer. Avoid mascaras that contain formaldehyde-releasing agents like DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, or diazolidinyl urea.

Carbon Black: Carbon black is a pigment commonly used in mascara to create a deep black color. However, it can contain impurities such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are classified as potential carcinogens. Check mascara labels for ingredients like “CI 77266” or “carbon black” and consider opting for mascaras made with natural or mineral-based pigments instead.

Fragrances: Fragrances may make mascaras more appealing, but they can contain a cocktail of harmful chemicals. Many fragrance ingredients have been linked to allergies, skin sensitization, and even respiratory issues. Look for fragrance-free mascaras or those that use natural essential oils for a safer alternative.

Phthalates: Phthalates are plasticizers used to improve the flexibility and longevity of mascara formulas. However, certain phthalates, such as dibutyl phthalate (DBP), have been linked to reproductive toxicity and hormone disruption. Avoid mascaras containing phthalates by checking ingredient lists for terms like “phthalate,” “DEP,” or “DBP.”

When it comes to our health and well-being, it’s essential to be mindful of the products we use, including mascara. By understanding the harmful toxins commonly found in mascaras, such as parabens, formaldehyde, carbon black, fragrances, and phthalates, we can make informed choices and prioritize safer alternatives. Here are my top picks for toxin free mascara that you can purchase on Amazon!

Low Tox Makeup at Target

I spent hours on the Target website finding makeup products that are actually toxin free. I quickly learned that the “clean” label at Target is not a reliable source.

This is an ingredient label for a product that has the clean label at Target…

Lets break down a few of the toxins on this ingredient list:

Talc – Can be contaminated with asbestiform fibers. Asbestiform fibers are known carcinogens and studies have linked them to mesothelioma. source

Methylparaben & Propylparaben – Immune and skin toxin. They mimic estrogen and disrupt the endocrine system and parabens are toxic to the developmental and reproductive systems, interfere with gene expression and are associated with cancer. source

This ingredient not only has 3 of the top toxins I would advise to always avoid BUT it also has the “clean” label from Target. HOW and WHY is this allowed?!

Unfortunately, we cannot always trust the “clean” label at many stores. That’s why I looked through every makeup product and have posted them here.

Other toxins I found in the Target makeup products:

Phenoxyethanol, PEG’s, Disodium EDTA, Lake Dyes, Parfum/Fragrance

LOW TOX MAKEUP AT TARGET

Foundation:

Well People Lip Nurture Hydrating Balm – Clear (only the clear color is approved by me, the rest contain LAKE dyes)

Pacifica Lavender Moon Lip Mask – I have this and love it!

But why no blush options?! Every single blush (even in the “clean” section) contained Lake dyes. Lake Dyes are derived from coal tar/petroleum and can contain heavy metals that are linked with cancer.

My favorite blush is from Han Cosmetics, it is fruit pigemented and the fomular is perfect! I will link it HERE.

There ya have it! I hope this is helpful and gives you a better idea of what to look for when you’re shopping at Target!

Low Tox Makeup Remover

Before I dive into the best low tox makeup remover options, lets quickly chat about common toxins in makeup removers on the market.

A popular makeup remover is the Neutrogena Makeup Removing Wipes. Here is the ingredient list for the wipes:

The highlighted ingredients are the ingredients of concern. Lets break each toxic ingredient down:

PEG-6: Are used as surfactants, emulsifiers, cleansing agents in a lot of cosmetics today.

The concern with PEGs?

PEGs have impurities of 1,4 dioxane and ethylene oxide which are carcinogenic and associated with reproductive, developmental and endocrine negative effects. source

Phenoxyethanol: A preservative that can be derived from green tea but most of the time in the U.S. It is created synthetically in a lab. Phenoxyethanol is made from the reaction of ethlene oxide, phenol and an alkai.

The concern of Phenoxyethanol?

Ethlene oxide on it’s own is a carcinogen and it is a possible endocrine disrupter. Phenol is a toxic powder made from benzene which is also a carcinogen. Phenoxyethanol is a ethoxylated ingredients, can can contain 1,4 dioxane, a known carcinogen. source 1 source 2 source 3

Chlorphenesin: A preservative.

The concern of Chlorphenesin?

Chlorphenesin have shown to show immunosuppressive activity. source

What does immunosuppressive mean? Suppression of the body’s immune system and its ability to fight infections and other diseases.

Polysorbate 20: Is a ethoxylated ingredient that may contain 1,4 dioxane and ethylene oxide. 1,4 dioxane is a known carciongen and endocrine disrupter. source

Fragrance: Is a blanket term for over 3,000 different ingredients that can contain chemicals associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and negative effects on the reproductive system. In the U.S., fragrance is a trade secret so brands do not have to legally disclose what they use in their fragrance. source source

8 Low Tox Swaps for Aquaphor

Aquaphor was one of the hardest low tox swaps for me to make! It was my go-to lip balm, cuticle cream and applying it to basically any dry spot on my body.

I knew that I needed to swap out my Aquaphor for a cleaner alternative because of these two ingredients.

The ingredients that raise a red flag:

Petrolatum & Mineral Oil

AKA petroleum jelly, paraffin

Petrolatum can contain toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) if not properly refined. In the US it is not required to refine the petroleum. In Europe it is required, so petrolatum in EU is much safer.

What are PAHs?

“A class of chemicals that occur naturally in coal, crude oil, and gasoline. They result from burning coal, oil, gas, wood, garbage, and tobacco. PAHs can bind to or form small particles in the air.” source

What’s the issue with PAHs?

“They are known to have carcinogenic, mutagenic neurodegenerative disorder, and teratogenic properties making their presence in consumer care products an environment health concern.” source

What to use instead?!

After learning this about petrolatum and mineral oil, I started my search for the best clean alternative. Here are all the clean low tox swaps for Aquaphor:

Honest Organic All-Purpose Balm – $12.99

This is my top favorite. It’s the closest possible swap for Aquaphor I have tried!

This was made with babies in mind but it works great for adults as well. I love a multi-purpose product! I use it on my lips and cuticles but it is also great for dry elbows, knees, etc.

Side note: I really wanted a product that was in a squeeze tube because it is less messy and easier to bring on the go!

Cocokind Ceramide Recovery Balm – $21.99

I love Cocokind, they do a great job of making low tox skincare products that are affordable and accessible.

This product is a great swap for Aquaphor and as someone with sensitive skin, this one can be great for on the face as well. (Perfect for you girlies that like do nighttime slugging!)

Dr. Bronner’s Organic Magic Balm – $14.03

This is probably my second favorite. It’s a really good product for moisturizing dry skin. I like to use it for flyaways in hair as well! A little bit goes a long way.

Waxelene Multi-Purpose Ointment – $39.99

“It is a fast-acting treatment for eczema and psoriasis flare-ups.” from waxelene dot com

This comes in a big jar. It’ll last you forever!

Alba Botanica Un-Petroleum Jelly – $8.41

Think Vaseline but the cleaner, low tox version. A must for every first aid kit!

Maty’s All Natural Baby Multipurpose Ointment – $14.99

I haven’t tried this one but I got feedback from a few of you on my Instagram that it is your top favorite!

The Good Stuff Gypsy Cream – $34

This is my sister’s favorite! She is a mom of four and uses it on all of them. Dry spots, diaper rash and even on her acne scarring! I need to try this one ASAP!

Rowe Casa Organics Boo-Boo Salve – $12

This is another one that was suggested to me by you on Instagram! I have not tried it but based on the feedback I received, it’s the perfect swap!

As you can see, there are great alternatives to Aquaphor. I am all about a balanced 80/20 lifestyle when it comes to toxin free living.

But with this many amazing alternatives, there is no excuse to not switch out this common household product!
