Non-Toxic Swaps to Make This Fall

October is here which means it’s time to switch over to all things fall!

You can still have all the smells and flavors of fall WITHOUT the toxins. Keep reading to see my favorite non-toxic swaps to make!

Fall Candle

Plant Therapy Warm Pumpkin Spice Candle

  • This is from my favorite company for essential oils, so I was excited to see candles! Made with soy and coconut wax + their essential oils.

Fate Naturals Candles (code: KARLY10)

  • I wanted to keep this blog post to majority swaps that can be found on Amazon but I can’t talk about fall candles without mentioning my personal favorite from a small business that I love supporting.

Electric Lighter

  • These are so much better than a traditional lighter and make lighting candles more fun 🙂

Fall Drinks

Always avoid natural flavors, but if you see “organic natural flavors” that is completely different and approved!

Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder

  • I’ve been loving this matcha powder mixed with oat milk + the liquid monk fruit listed below.

Organic Liquid Monk FruitPumpkin Spice

  • This has all real food ingredients and can be used for baking or sweetening coffee too.

Laird Superfood Instant LattePumpkin Spice

Laird Superfood Non-DairyPumpkin Spice

Fall Hand Soap

Foaming Hand Soap Dispenser

  • I have the fluted one, but I’ve also linked a more affordable option. The key here is to get glass or stainless steel instead of plastic.

Plant Therapy Fall Festival Essential Oil Blend Set

  • Comes with Pumpkin Spice, Peppermint Latte, & Autumn Breeze

  • 3rd party tested! Which is what you want to look for when shopping for essential oils.

Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Liquid SoapUnscented

DIY hand soap:

  1. Fill 1/3 of the container with Dr. Bronner’s unscented soap

  2. Add about 20 drops of your essential oil of choice

  3. Fill the rest of the way up and shake to mix

P.S. This only works with a foaming hand soap pump, not a regular one.

Attitude Liquid Hand SoapApple & Spices

  • My favorite fall-scented hand soap! Grab it when it’s in stock because it goes fast.

Air Fresheners

Aim to avoid all synthetic fragrances when looking to make your space smell yummy. The word “fragrance” is a blanket term for over 3000 different chemicals that we know could be possible carcinogens or can mess with our hormones.

Grow Fragrance Plant Based Air FreshenerGinger Pumpkin

  • Spray this in the air, or on your linens, it smells SO good.

Enviroscent Scent Stix + StandHoneycrisp Apple + Cardamom / Vanilla Bean & Pumpkin Chai

  • When these run out you can buy more sticks and they’re super affordable.

Enviroscent Non-Toxic Room & Home Air Freshener Plug-inVanilla Bean & Pumpkin Chai

  • A great swap for glade plug-ins or those wallflowers from Bath & Body Works. You can also get refills for these so you don’t have to buy the wall plug in again.

Fall Lip Combo

Jane Iredale Lip Pencil in the color Spice

  • The perfect neutral mauve pink. I used to use the Charlotte Tilbury Pillowtalk and this is very similar!

Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain P-H Activated in the color Forever Peach

  • This lip balm adjusts to your own PH so it looks slightly different on everyone. It’s a stain so it lasts a long time!

Cold & Flu Relief

Soothing Honey Cough Drops

  • Get these if you need cough drops.. no nasty ingredients or dies and will actually HELP your immune system rather than masking symptoms.

Beekeeper’s Naturals Propolis Throat Spray

  • I like to use this daily (4 sprays in your throat) to help boost my immune system. It also helps numb your throat a bit if you’re sick and have a sore throat.

Thorne Zinc Bisglycinate

  • Take this if you start feeling a cold coming on. Thorne does 3rd party testing too which is a must.

Thorne Vitamin C

Matys Vapor Rub for Adults and Kids

  • Use this instead of Vick’s vapor rub when you need a chest rub. Vick’s is made of petrolatum which is derived from petroleum oil (yuck!).

  • You can use this on kids 2 years and up!

Fall Snacks

Lesserevil Organic Pumpkin Spice Popcorn

  • I love this brand. I’m still dreaming of the flavor they came out with last Christmas.

YumEarth Halloween Organic Sour Littles Chewy Candy

  • A great swap for Halloween candy!

My Non-Toxic Haircare Routine

Here it is! My complete non-toxic haircare routine. I genuinely love my haircare routine but it was not an easy journey to get here.. I’m well aware that this is an area where it can be extremely hard to find products that actually work. It was by far THE HARDEST category for me to make the switch to be fully non-toxic. I finally feel like I have my routine down to science and I’m so excited to share it with you!

About my hair:

I have thick hair that’s not color-treated and it’s all my natural hair—no extensions.

I wash my hair 1-2 times per week. I also double-cleanse my hair with two different shampoos. I have super thick, long hair so double cleansing helps me get it completely clean and allows me to go longer between washes.

When I wash my hair, I start with the JVN Volumizing Shampoo. JVN has three different lines of shampoo, I use the volumizing one because it doesn’t weigh my hair down like the hydrating one. For my second wash, I will either use the Attitude Volumizing Shampoo or the John Masters Organics Nourishing Shampoo.

One thing to note about non-toxic shampoos: they won’t suds up like your traditional shampoo will. The ingredients that make traditional shampoos suds up are the toxic ingredients that we want to avoid (i.e. parabens, sulfates, etc.). It takes some getting used to if you’re first switching over to non-toxic, but I promise it’s a good thing!

Shampoo

JVN Embody Volumizing Shampoo

  • The scent of this is amazing (light and clean) and this is the closest I’ve found to salon-quality shampoo. It comes in an aluminum bottle with a pump. It keeps my scalp feeling clean and is great for anyone who doesn’t have super specific hair needs.

Attitude Volumizing Shampoo

  • I would compare this to a drugstore shampoo in terms of affordability and versatility. It works for any hair type! My sister uses this for her girls’ hair and it’s even great for color-treated hair.

John Masters Organics Daily Nourishing Shampoo

  • This is great for dry, damaged, or colored hair. It was the first shampoo that worked for me after trying a bunch of different non-toxic brands that just wrecked my hair. It doesn’t suds up at all, so keep that in mind. And it smells super “organic”, like lavender and rosemary, which I like.

Conditioner

JVN Nurture Hydrating Conditioner

  • I use this for the 1st time I wash my hair during the week, and I let it sit while I do everything else in the shower (body wash, shave, etc.) I love this one because it’s hydrating but not too heavy on my hair.

JVN Nurture Intense Hydration Mask

  • I use this for my 2nd wash of the week, in place of conditioner, so only once a week at most. If you only get one product, get this one—it’s the best hair mask. You only need a TINY bit so it will last forever.

Innersense Organic Beauty Natural Hydrating Hair Mask

  • This is another good option for a hair mask. It works really well

Leave-In Products

Innersense Organic Beauty Sweet Spirit Leave-In Conditioner

  • I spray this on my hair right when I get out of the shower. It helps with shine, frizz, and tangles, but does NOT protect against heat. It’s a great swap for the “it’s a 10” leave-in conditioner.

JVN No Heat Air Dry Cream

  • If you like to air dry your hair, this will change your life. It keeps your hair smooth and I feel like my hair dries faster when I use this too. I LOVE it. Only use a tiny bit.

Heat Protectant

Innersense Organic Beauty Natural Hair Love Prep Spray

  • This is my favorite heat protectant spray, which you can use on wet or dry hair. It has a very light, floral/citrus scent. This is what I’m using if I’m curling or straightening my already-dry hair.

JVN Complete Blowout Styling Milk Heat Protector Cream

  • When I blow dry my hair, I use this as my heat protectant. It gives my hair lots of volume and shine.

Styling Products

Shark HD430 FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System

  • This is the BEST all-in-one styling product. I was on the fence for so long and I wish I’d bought it sooner. This gives me my big, bouncy, blow-out curls. It’s completely replaced all of my other hair-styling tools and is what I take with me whenever I travel.

Wet Brush

  • I think this is a great all-around brush. It works to detangle my thick hair.

John Masters Organics Hair Spray

  • This is the only hair spray I’ve found that’s completely non-toxic and actually works. It holds my curls and makes them last so long.

JVN Complete Nourishing Shine Drops

  • A great swap for the wow dream coat and doesn’t weigh your hair down at all.

Innersense Organic Beauty Natural Hydrating Hair Mask

Travel-Size Products

JVN Trusted Trio Essentials Set

  • A great way to try out JVN products! This set has the Air-Dry Cream, the Pre-Wash Scalp Oil, and the Instant Recovery Serum.

JVN Bring the Heat Hair Set

  • This set has the Blowout Styling Milk, Nourishing Shine Drops, and the Instant Recovery Serum.

Miscellaneous Products

Kitsch Microfiber Hair Towel

  • I put my hair up in this when I get out of the shower to keep it up and away from the body lotion/oils I put on. It’s affordable too!

John Masters Organics Nourishing Hair Mask

  • This is what I use when I do a slicked back pony or bun. This is a great swap for the dae styling cream.

Just Ingredients Dry Shampoo

  • This is my favorite dry shampoo! You can get it from the Just Ingredients website, and use my code KARLYALANE. It has a pump bottle so it’s not as messy.

Handmade Heroes Non Aerosol Dry Shampoo

  • This is another good dry shampoo that you can get from Amazon. This one is more of a shake-and-pour situation. It works well and is super cheap!

Gimme Beauty Hair Ties

  • My favorite hair ties because they hold my thick hair all day and don’t leave a crease.

Scalp Care

John Masters Organics Scalp Exfoliating Scrub

  • I use this with my silicon scalp massager once a month to really exfoliate the dead skin. I find I no longer have to use a dandruff shampoo when I do this.

Silicon Scalp Massager

  • I like to use this every time I wash my hair.

Carina Organics Unscented Dandruff Flake Removal Shampoo

  • Good for getting rid of dandruff!

Attitude Clarifying Hair Shampoo

  • Helps get rid of build-up. Also great to use once in a while if you have hard water.

Divi Hair Scalp Serum

  • This is approved by me and I’ve heard it’s great for hair loss.

John Masters Organics 100% Argan Oil

  • Once a month I’ll do a scalp treatment with this and put it all over my scalp and hair and let it sit. I’ll also use this on my ends if they’re feeling a little dry.

Cliganic Organic Argan Oil

  • A more affordable option for argon oil!

I hope this blog post is helpful in creating your own non-toxic haircare routine. Let me know if you have any questions! You can also go watch my Amazon Live where I go through my routine step-by-step here.

Mens

Men’s Non-Toxic Products

Let me guess… you have successfully swapped majority of the product in your home BUT you are still struggling to get the man in your life on board. Maybe that’s because he can’t let go of his Old Spice deodorant or he doesn’t think it matters…Sound familiar?!

Well…maybe showing him this list will help convince him!

Tap here to shop the products

Here are the top five toxic ingredients commonly found in men’s grooming products and why you should avoid them:

  1. Parabens

    • What They Are: Preservatives used to extend shelf life.

    • Why to Avoid: Parabens can mimic estrogen in the body, potentially disrupting hormonal balance and increasing the risk of certain cancers.

  2. Sulfates (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate)

    • What They Are: Foaming agents found in shampoos and body washes.

    • Why to Avoid: Sulfates can strip natural oils, leading to skin irritation, dryness, and potential long-term damage to hair and skin.

  3. Phthalates

    • What They Are: Chemicals used to make fragrances last longer and products more flexible.

    • Why to Avoid: Phthalates have been linked to reproductive and developmental issues, including hormone disruption and increased risk of birth defects.

  4. Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-Releasing Agents (e.g., DMDM Hydantoin)

    • What They Are: Preservatives used to prevent bacterial growth.

    • Why to Avoid: Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and can cause skin irritation and respiratory issues.

  5. Triclosan

    • What It Is: An antimicrobial agent found in some soaps and deodorants.

    • Why to Avoid: Triclosan can disrupt hormone function and contribute to antibiotic resistance, potentially making infections harder to treat.

Now that we got that out of the way…

I wanted to put together my husband’s tried and true list of products that are Karly Approved and he continues to buy. The man in your life may not even know these products are non-toxic they are so good!

Shop all Hygiene Lab Men’s Products

1: The Black Stuff Bar Soap – The best non-toxic bar of soap. I love The Black Stuff brand because they use all clean ingredients (all of their fragrance and scents are approved by me!) but they are still affordable. Their entire line is a great way to swap your man’s products to a cleaner alternative. This bar of soap smells delish and lasts a long time! This Irish Spring scent is the perfect swap for any man in your life that loves Irish Spring soap.

2: Attitude Men’s 2-in-1 Shampoo & Body Wash – Yep, I found a non-toxic 2-in1! Run and tell the man in your life. Attitude is a great brand for beauty, personal care and home products that are all non-toxic. This 2-in-1 is a great option for men. It suds up nicely and smells delish.

3: Hygiene Lab Shampoo – If the man in your life (btw, if you’re a man reading this, sry I am not addresses you directly…majority of my audience is women but HI happy you’re here!) would prefer seperate shampoo and conditioner then definitely choose this one! I got this shampoo for Sean 6 months ago and he loves it! A little bit goes a long way, it smells good and works for any hair type. I asked Sean if he prefers these for his hair or the Attitude 2-in-1 and he said this shampoo.

4: Hygiene Lab Hair GelAn easy non-toxic swap! The perfect strong hold, matte hair gel for the men in your life!

5: The Black Stuff Deodorant – This is my husband’s all time favorite non-toxic product that I have recommended to him. This deodorant works so well (sometimes I wonder how they pulled this off without any toxins?!) but it is completely clean! If you have been trying to get the guy in your life to go aluminum free..definitely try this one! It’s doesn’t stain clothes, applies really well and all the scents are clean.

6: Dime No. 1 Cologne (discount code: KARLYA) – Oooo let me tell you…not only does Sean (my husband) LOVE this cologne…but so do I. It smells SO GOOD! But the great thing about the Dime fragrances is that they share the exact ingredients in their fragrance. (which is hard to come by) They have 2 different cologne scents and this one is my favorite. The scent notes are: Sparkling Grapefruit, Rosemary Sprig, Dark Rhum. It is not sweet but the citrus does lighten it up a little bit but I describe it as smelling like….a bougie rich man. SO GOOD!

7: Dime Voir Le Bon Cologne (discount code: KARLYA) – This is the other Dime cologne scent and it does smell really good as well. The scent notes are: Mixed Citrus, Cashmere Woods, White Amber. This scent is a little bit warmer than No. 1 Cologne. A must try!

8: Hygiene Lab Face Cleanser – A great gentle everyday face cleanser for the men in your life. Good for any skin type! This face wash not only cleanses but also nourishes and revitalizes your skin. Aloe Vera Leaf Juice and Sodium Hyaluronate provide soothing and hydrating benefits, leaving your skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

9: Hygiene Lab Face Moisturizer A completely clean, non-toxic face moisturizer made for men. It’s light weighht and good for any skin type! Perfect to use after the Hygiene Lab Cleanser.

10: Jack Fir Shave Cream – This has been Sean’s favorite shave cream that I have showed him. It’s great for sensitive skin and it has aloe to moisturize the skin at the same time. It is a little bit pricey BUT a tiny bit goes a long way – this will last awhile! When I am out of my favorite shave cream (would also be great for men) I will use this. Sorry not sorry.

11: Viking Beard Oil – A beard oil that has all clean ingredients AND it is under $10….a win! There are a few different scents to choose from and they are all approved by me. What more can I say?! It’s great!

12: Lola Ultra Thin Condoms – We have bought these 5 times in the last 6 months 👀 if you’re gonna use condoms..use these! They are thin, comfortable and don’t contain any weird toxic fragrance, dyes or PFAS.

13: Lola Personal Lubricant – Another favorite of both of us…I didn’t really like non-toxic lube was a thing but..it is! This one is the best one and super affordable! It’s a gift for both of you. 😉

14: Dr. Bronners Peppermint Lip Balm – Hey guys….please use lip balm! This one is perfect for them because it’s just a good, non-tox basic lip balm. It’s hydrating while still a little cooling because the peppermint. I also love this lip balm.

Okay…I think I covered all the areas that men need! Let me know on my Instagram what I missed. I keep this list on my Amazon updated with all the best men’s products as I find them as well!

Gift Guides

Father’s Day Gift Guide (Non-Tox Edition)

Father’s Day is hereeeee (well, June 16th to be exact)

There is no better time to get a dad in your life a non-toxic product. They may not be on board with you switching to cleaner products but gifting a non-tox deodorant or shampoo can be the perfect way to help them realize we can still have great products w/o harmful ingredients. It’s a win-win.

In this gift guide I share personal care, clothing & grilling gift ideas!

Dime Voir Le Bon (Discount Code: KARLYA) – Dime is Sean and my go-to for non-tox colognes and perfumes. These colognes last alll day on Sean and they both smell amazing. The men in your life won’t even know the difference between this one (that won’t mess with the hormones or give you a headache) and traditional synthetic fragrance. Fragrance notes: Mixed Citrus, Cashmere Woods, White Amber

Dime No. 1 Cologne (Discount Code: KARLYA) – This is my personal favorite scent between the two Dime colognes. When Sean puts this on 🤤😍 It smells so so good and lasts on him all day. Fragrance notes: Sparkling Grapefruit, Rosemary Sprig, Dark Rhum

Dr. Squatch Body Wash & Bar SoapHands down the best non-toxic men’s product line that I have found. They share the ingredients in their fragrance and all of them smell really good. Sean uses the bar of soap everyday and loves them – they last awhile! This one comes in a set which makes gift giving easy peasy.

Jack Henry Hair ClayFinally found men’s non-toxic hair styling clay/paste! Let me know if your man tries this, i’d love to hear your thoughts!

Dr. Squatch DeodorantThis is the only non-toxic deodorant that Sean actually likes! It works all day, even for the extra sweaty. Sometimes I even use it and like it as well. All of the scents are really good. Sean’s favorites are Pine Tar, Birchwood Breeze & Wood Barrel Bourbon.

Dr. Squatch Shampoo & ConditionerI know, another Dr. Squatch product but they really are the best and there aren’t a lot of non-toxic men’s lines on the market. This is Sean’s favorite shampoo and i haven’t had to get him a new on in over a year sooo…it lasts awhile or Sean doesn’t wash his hair enough…ha!

Jack Fir Shave CreamDoes the man in your life need a good shave cream?! This one has all clean ingredients!

Phillips OneBlade Electric Trimmer and Shaver This is probably the most used gift I have given Sean. I don’t know a lot about men’s shavers but he loves this thing! It trims and shaves, it’s cordless, small and easy to pack and the replacement blades are a good price. Maybe a man in your life needs an upgrade?! Pair it with the shave cream I shared right above this for the perfect gift!

Badger Beard BalmI have shared a few different non-tox beard balms over the years and this one is always the favorite. Probably because it’s affordable and has simple ingredients – good for sensitive skin too!

Pact Organic Men’s Boxer (Discount Code: KARLYALANE15) *code works on your first order – These are such good, basic but not too basic, high quality men’s boxers or boxer briefs. They are Sean’s favorite and it makes me happy to know that he is wearing organic GOTS certified material where it really matters. 😏 True to size!

Cast Iron Skillet If the dad in your life likes to cook or grill and they don’t have a cast iron skillet…you must get them one! It’s my favorite pan to cook with, all toxin free and it will benefit you too because everything they will cook on it is delish. Good to bring camping or use on the grill too!

Pact Crew Long Sleeve (Discount Code: KARLYALANE15) – This is not a full on sweatshirt but also not super thin. It’s the perfect summer time pull over for the men! Sean has this and wear it often. All organic and GOTS certified! It also looks good enough for a neighborhood BBQ but still casual.

Yeti Travel MugKinda basic, I know…but no man is going to be upset to receive this (it doesn’t have to be just for coffee – how about a cocktail on the boat?!) Also would be a good gift if a dad in your life is using a plastic travel cup. 👀

Grill Accessories – Lots of requests this Father’s Day for grill/Blackstone accessories. Luckily a lot of the tools are stainless steel or cast iron…both great non-toxic options. This set it super affordable and comes with everything they need!

Non-Toxic Bath Towels & Sheets

I went on a journey to find the best non-toxic towels. My towel requirements: they must be GOTS certified (more on this in the next paragraph) buttery soft (the kind of soft you get excited about leaving the hot water for,) big enough to cover your body but not too big to make it hard to store and the price has to match the quality. It can’t be too expensive but it also can’t be too cheap where you have to re-buy towels every year.

Now that we know what we are looking for in a towel… (if you told me 10 years ago I would be doing a deep dive on towels…I wouldn’t believe you but honestly, I am happy to be here)

….what is GOTS Certified?!

GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard. It is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.

3 reasons we want GOTS certified bedding and towels:

(go here for the full details and big words)

  1. The certification ensure that textiles are made with organic fibers, such as cotton or wool, are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

  2. GOTS prohibits the use of harmful chemicals in the processing and manufacturing of textiles

  3. GOTS certification requires rigorous tracking and documentation of all processes, from raw material sourcing to the final product. This promotes transparency and accountability.

This isn’t an easy certification to obtain so if the brand has it…know that they have gone through a lot of testing, observations, documentation, etc.

Okay but why are towels w/o the GOTS Certification harmful?!

Bath towels, like many textiles, can potentially contain various harmful toxins depending on the materials used and the manufacturing processes involved.

Common toxins you may find in towels/bedding:

Formaldehyde, Chlorine, Heavy Metals, Pesticide Residues, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Phthalates, Flame Retardants, PFAS

These can be possible carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, allergens or have neurological effects.

Now that you know all of this….don’t go throw away all the existing towels you have. We are not wasting in an economy like today, amiright?! Instead just keep this in mind and when you need a new towel or two look for the GOTS certification and use this as a guide.

I tried 3 different brands of GOTS certified towels and my favorites are…….

The Casaluna towels from Target! Yep, you heard that right! The most affordable option I tried are my favorite and they are available in store. A win-win!

Why are these my favorite? Well… they are a great price, they are so big which I love (I got the sheet size), they are nice and soft and they wash really well. They get even better after each wash! They may shed after the first wash but once you wash them again it will stop. For the price, quality and the GOTS Certification…these are the best non-tox towels! I also tried these organic GOTS Certified sheets from Target and I am pleasantly surprised. They are the perfect summer sheets because they keep you cool!

Other brands of GOT Certified towels I tried & didn’t love:

Pact: The towels are really soft but they are soooo small.

Under the Canopy: Ehhh…they are too scratchy for me. I do love their robes though!

Amazon Organic Towels: These were almost a winner because I love how thick they are BUT after a few washes they are not nearly as soft as they were to start.

Non-Toxic Guide to Coffee

I am definitely not trying to take away your beloved coffee but a lot of coffee makers are made of plastic or contain lead. HOWEVER, you know I found better alternatives for all you coffee lovers! Before we get to the better options, let’s look at things to avoid when shopping for coffee and coffee makers.

In this blog you will find: Classic Coffee Makers | Pour Over Coffee Maker | French Press | Espresso & Coffee Machine | Espresso Accessories | Coffee Filters | Mold Free Coffee | Coffee Storage | Coffee Mugs | Coffee Flavors | Coffee Creamer

Toxic Materials to Avoid in Coffee Makers:

  1. BPA (Bisphenol A): Often found in polycarbonate plastics, BPA can leach into your coffee, especially when plastic components are exposed to hot water. BPA exposure is linked to various health problems, including hormonal disruptions and heart issues.

  2. Aluminum: While less common, some coffee makers still feature aluminum elements. Acidic drinks like coffee can cause aluminum to corrode and leach into your brew, potentially leading to a metallic taste and health risks.

  3. Lead and Cadmium: These heavy metals can be found in the soldering of some coffee machines or the glazes used in ceramic parts. Both lead and cadmium are highly toxic and dangerous even in small amounts.

  4. PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances): Sometimes used in non-stick coatings within coffee pots and other appliances, PFAS are a group of chemicals linked to a range of health issues, including cancer and liver damage. They are persistent in the environment and difficult to avoid completely, but awareness and careful choice can significantly reduce exposure.

Choosing a Safer Coffee Maker:

To minimize your exposure to these toxins, consider the following tips when selecting a coffee maker:

  • Opt for Stainless Steel: Choose coffee makers that primarily use stainless steel in their water reservoirs and brewing mechanisms. Stainless steel is not only durable but also resists leaching, ensuring that your coffee remains pure and safe.

  • Look for BPA-Free Labels: Many manufacturers now specify if their products are BPA-free. Check for this label, especially on models that use plastic components.

  • Consider Glass or Ceramic: For those who prefer a different material, glass and certified lead-free ceramic are excellent alternatives. These materials do not leach chemicals and can withstand high temperatures without degrading.

  • Avoid Non-Stick Coatings: Be cautious of coffee makers with non-stick interiors, which may contain PFAS. Instead, look for models without such coatings to keep your coffee free from these harmful chemicals.

By choosing your coffee maker wisely and paying attention to the materials used in its construction, you can enjoy your daily coffee ritual without the worry of unwanted chemicals. A little awareness goes a long way in safeguarding your health against the hidden dangers lurking in everyday appliances. Happy brewing!

*it can be hard to find a 100% plastic free coffee makers (basically impossible unless you choose a pour over or french press) but I made sure to find BPA free options with minimal plastic.

Balance is so important while you are ditching toxins (you know I use the 80/20 rule) so don’t beat yourself up if your coffee maker has a few plastic pieces. All of these coffee makers are BPA free which is the best option if you do have plastic.

Coffee Beans:

Now lets talk about the actual coffee beans! Yes, unfortunately there can toxins like mold in your coffee beans or grounds. The mold is the main concern in coffee so here is what to look for to ensure you are getting high-quality mold free coffee and brands to shop!

Choosing mold-free coffee is essential for enjoying a healthier and tastier brew. Here are some key steps to ensure your coffee is mold-free:

Look for Certified Brands: Choose coffee brands that are certified organic. Organic certifications often involve rigorous quality control measures that reduce the likelihood of mold contamination.

Check for Specialty Certifications: Certifications such as “Clean Coffee,” “Mold-Free,” or “Mycotoxin-Free” indicate that the coffee has been tested and verified to be free from mold and mycotoxins. Brands like Bulletproof and Purity Coffee specifically test for these contaminants.

Research the Brand’s Quality Control: Investigate the brand’s processing and quality control measures. Reputable brands will often share information about their harvesting, drying, and storage processes, which are critical for preventing mold growth.

Read Reviews and Lab Tests: Look for independent reviews and lab test results. Some third-party organizations and consumer groups test coffee for mold and mycotoxins, and their findings can be insightful.

Proper Storage: Once you have your coffee, store it properly. Keep your coffee beans or grounds in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to prevent mold growth.

Buy Fresh, Whole Beans: Purchasing fresh, whole beans and grinding them just before brewing can also reduce the risk of mold. Whole beans are less likely to have mold compared to pre-ground coffee, which has a larger surface area exposed to moisture and contaminants.

By following these steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of mold in your coffee and enjoy a healthier, more flavorful cup each time.

Storing your coffee beans or ground in an airtight glass or stainless steel jar in a dark dry space is ideal to reduce the chance of mold! Here are some good options:

The best option for coffee mugs are glass or stainless steel! Ceramic isn’t a terrible option either but definitely avoid plastic. Here are some of my favorite non-toxic coffee mugs & travel cups!

Coffee flavors can be filled with artificial sweeteners, flavors or dyes but I found that the organic line of Monin syrups have good ingredients! (Organic flavor is significantly better than natural flavors)

Coffee creamers with all clean ingredients can be hard to find! I do my best to avoid natural flavors, artificial sweeteners and inflammatory oils like canola, vegetable or sunflower oil. Here are some better options! Making your own is the best option.

Was this guide helpful?! I would love for you to share it with a friend!

Reminder: An 80/20 balance is so important to maintain a non-tox lifestyle without going crazy or getting overwhelmed. Make one small swap at a time…if you are on this blog post that means you care about the ingredients in your everyday products and that is the first step to ditching toxins!

Proud of you – enjoy your coffee!

Mother’s Day Gift Guide (Non-Tox Edition)

Mother’s Day is almost here friends! Perfect time to treat your mom or any mom in your life with a non-tox product. I focused on self-care gifts because that’s what mom’s deserve!

1: JVN Trio Essential Travel Hair Set JVN is a great brand for non-toxic haircare that works on all hair types. This set has 3 of my favorite products from them for healthier hydrated hair! This is a great chance to introduce a mom in your life to clean haircare.

2: Enviroscent Stix Diffuser A clean, non-tox option for a reed diffuser! I have one of these in all my bathrooms and they actually smell delish and last awhile. A cute little something for a mom. Once you gift this…I bet your mom will ditch the Bath & Body Works products. 👀

3: Candle Warming Lamp Not only is this cute decor but it also makes your candles last a lot longer and it is safer! Get this for the mom in your life that has young kids. Then they can burn their favorite candles without the open flame. I love to use these when my candles are almost running out, it gets that last little bit of wax and makes your home smell delish! I turn the one on in my bedroom everynight for good mood lighting too. (Pair it with the Fate Naturals Mom Candle #8 for the perfect complete gift.)

It’s a subtle color but perfect for everyday wear. Feels moisturizing on the lips too! Also lasts all. day. long. A must for your mom but also for you if you haven’t tried it!

8: Fate Naturals Candle (code: KARLY10) – It wouldn’t be a Karly Alane gift guide without a Fate Naturals candle. They are the only candles I use in my home because they are soy wax and non-toxic, clean fragrance. For Mother’s Day she launched a line of candles with different mom themed labels. My favorite is the one in this photo “When this is lit, mom is off duty” but there are so many different options!

Once you start using this body butter and body oil…nothing else compares! There’s your warning.

11: The Reading Journal This is a really cool journal with different prompts for you to review the books you have read, keep track of what you’re reading/what you want to read, set reading goals and take notes. My mom is a big reader so once I found this I knew I needed to gift this to her (mom if you are reading this pretend you aren’t see this)

12: Envrioscent Wall Plug-In If you are trying to get your mom to ditch the toxic scented wall plug-ins that give you a headache when you go to her house…get them a few of these! They smell delish but they are all non-tox. The Spring Water + Lotus and Lemon are my favorite scents.

Deep Dives

Brand Deep Dives

This is the landing page for all the weekly brand Deep Dives I do on my socials!

What is a Deep Dive?! Every Thursday I dive into all the ingredients of a specific brand and let you know if there are any harmful toxins (endocrine disrupters or probable carcinogens) you should avoid. I let you know if the product is approved by me or something I would avoid.

Just because a brand has one clean product doesn’t mean all the products are clean (and vice versa) so I like to talk about each product individually.

On this page you will find: All the Deep Dives I have done in 2024, the links to shop all the approved products & the ingredients to avoid in each product.
