What to AVOID
There are 2 main categories to look for in your sunscreen to avoid:
1. Active Ingredients:
- Avobenzone – linked with cellular damage & skin irritation
- Oxybenzone – potential hormone-disruption concerns
- Octinoxate – environmental and endocrine concerns
- Octisalate – possible skin irritation and possible endocrine-disrupting effects
- Octocrylene – may degrade into benzophenone over time
- Homosalate – may interfere with hormone signaling
2. Inactive Ingredients:
- PEGs – possible contamination with 1,4 dioxane (carcinogen)
- Fragrance – possible endocrine disrupter, lack of transparency
- Disodium EDTA – possible reproduction & development toxin
- Trideceth – possible contamination with 1,4 dioxane
- Parabens (Methylparaben, Propylparaben, etc.) – endocrine disrupters

about Butyloctyl Salicylate…
A lot of the concern online about butyloctyl salicylate comes from the word “salicylate,” but it’s important to know this ingredient is not a UV filter or an active drug. It’s mainly used as a solvent and emollient in sunscreen formulas to help other UV filters spread more evenly and feel nicer on the skin. It has actually been reviewed for safety by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, which is an independent group of scientists that evaluates cosmetic ingredients, and they concluded that butyloctyl salicylate is safe for use in cosmetics as it is currently used in products, including sunscreens. In practice, it’s been used globally for years in well-formulated sunscreens without evidence of harm at the levels found in topical products. So when you see it on an ingredient list, it’s really there to improve texture and performance—not because it functions like a hormone-active “chemical sunscreen” itself.
